I started a quest to find terrific blues music and incredible musicianship when I was just a little kid. I also have a tremendous appreciation of fine musical instruments and equipment. One of my greatest joys all of my life was sharing my finds with my friends. I'm now publishing my journey. I hope that you come along!

Bloodshot Records artist: Lydia Loveless - Somewhere Else - New Release Review

I just received the newest release (February 18, 2014), Somewhere Else, from Lydia Loveless. This new release is quite pleasing with a pop country style but more meat than you would expect from the genre. Opening with Really Wanna See You, an uptempo rocker, Loveless has a sweet "Stevie Nicks" like voice and the band is quite tight. Wine Lips, a slower but mid tempo track has strong radio potential waith just a pinch of country in the guitar riffs setting it apart. Chris Isaak is a real nice track and showcases Loveless' vocal style quite well. With just a tinge of retro styling this is one of the best tracks on the release. To Love Somebody has light airy feel sound and a clear hook. Another track that could easily garner strong airplay. Hurts So Bad has a Philly soul with pop country style but with distinctive Loveless touches making it one of the most memorable tracks on the release. Head has a British sound but style keeping with contemporary pop country feeling another very cool track. Verlaine Shot Rimbaud is a quiet acoustic ballad with edge. Picking up texture and emotion as it grows, this is another track which could easily hit the charts. Somewhere Else opens with a soft pedal steel part just dabbing at country styling but remaining in the pop arena. Loveless really has an attractive voice and is likely to attract many regular listeners with this kind of outing. Everything's Gone takes one more step into the country with a more introspective ballad. Not masking it's intentions, I think this is one of the stronger compositions on the release. They Don't Know, a track made popular in the US by Tracey Ullman keeps it's basic pop outline but with just a twist of country and Loveless' seductive vocal timbre. This release really doesn't venture far into the blues arena but it is an enjoyable release.

Look out! because Bloodshot artists Scott H. Biram and Lydia Loveless are touring together in 2012. FREE DOWNLOADS

The aptly titled Bad Machine Tour follows the release of outstanding new albums in Biram’s Bad Ingredients and Loveless’ Indestructible Machine and brings together two genre-defining voices, as well as Bloodshot Records label mates.

The perfect bluesman for the 21st century, Biram filters classic American roots music through metal, hardcore and plenty of whiskey, resulting in a sound as unique as it is awesome. – Metromix, on Scott

She conveys toughness, tenderness and humor with off-handed conviction… these are songs that signal a major new voice blowing into the country-punk dives and honky-tonks. Chicago Tribune, on Lydia

The Bad Machine Tour begins in Dallas, TX on January 26 and circles around the Southeastern US before looping back to Houston, Texas (venue to be announced) two weeks later. Full tour dates and ticket links are below.

Indestructible Machine [out 9/13] - LYDIA LOVELESS

On September 13th – the recently signed 21 year-old singer/guitarist Lydia Loveless will be releasing her Bloodshot debut Indestructible Machine

"All of 20, she's got the songwriting soul of someone twice her age and a voice to die for. Her appearance at the recent SXSW made us full-on believers." —Boudin Barndance

Blessed with a blast-it-to-the-back-of-the-room voice, the 21-year-old native of Columbus, OH combines country classicism with punk rock candor—sometimes within the same song.

Lydia grew up on a farm in Coshocton OH, a small weird town with nothing to do but make music. So she did, starting off by playing bass in her sister's band at age 14.

She cites Hank Sr, Hank III, Richard Hell, Charles Bukowski, Loretta Lynn, Britney Spears and Lydia's musically inclined family as her big inspirations. Yes, you read that right. Bukowski AND Spears.
