I started a quest to find terrific blues music and incredible musicianship when I was just a little kid. I also have a tremendous appreciation of fine musical instruments and equipment. One of my greatest joys all of my life was sharing my finds with my friends. I'm now publishing my journey. I hope that you come along!

Lakota John & Kin's Long Awaited Album is Here!

Musical Family Group's self-titled album Lakota John & Kin Released!
The Album You've Been Waiting For is Here!

Lakota John and Kin, the self-titled debut album from John Lakota Locklear and his family, offers a blend of ancient Native American harmonies and traditional blues. Mama Tonya, Sweet Papa John and Sister Layla join Lakota John on this album, the first by the family on the Music Maker label.

A proud Lumbee and Oglala Nation family of talented musicians, Lakota John and Kin are based out of Robeson County, North Carolina. Lakota John, at just 16-years-old, is a master guitarist with a voice that sounds beyond his years. He grew up listening to his dad's music collection, and picked up the harmonica at the age of seven and the guitar at the age of nine. A year later, he bought himself a glass slide and picked up the slide guitar.

Listen to a preview track of the album here!

"Lakota John and Kin stem from the great North Carolina family string band tradition," says Tim Duffy, Founder of Music Maker Relief Foundation. "This album shows a young blues prodigy surrounded by his family's love in a long standing Lumbee musical tradition. The album is a lovely interpretation of blues favorites and inspirational songs."

Lakota John & Kin are part of our Next Generation program, which encourages and mentors younger artists performing Southern traditional music. While these artists do not receive financial support, Music Maker assists them in other ways to foster the continuation of Southern music through this "Next Generation."
