I started a quest to find terrific blues music and incredible musicianship when I was just a little kid. I also have a tremendous appreciation of fine musical instruments and equipment. One of my greatest joys all of my life was sharing my finds with my friends. I'm now publishing my journey. I hope that you come along!

Hunnia Records artist: Little G Weevil - Live Acoustic Session - New Release Review

I just had the opportunity to review the most recent release, Live Acoustic Set, from Little G Weevil, and I really like it. From the intro on original track, Keep Going, you can tell that Little G Weevil's newest release is going to be good. Totally acoustic and alone, Weevil shows a respect and love for the original delta style blues.  Another Weevil composition, Real Men Don't Dance, shows a lot of similarities to Hill Country blues style with very simple guitar riffs and call and response between his acoustic guitar and his own lead vocal. Very nice. On R L Burnside's Early In The Morning, Weevil rides tight on a traditional blues riff and wails the blues from his gut. With thumped strings and percussive raps on the guitar body, Weevil shows all the prowess of a delta blues man. Fluid lead runs and a great story line characterize Sasha Said, a straight up Chicago style blues track. Morganfield flavored, Apple Picker, is deep. Weevil really drills down on the guitar lead, accents and double stops before breaking cadence with some really nice fluid soloing and delivers the lead vocal in traditional style. Excellent! I really like the drone note bottom on On My Way to Memphis, with quick fillers supporting the vocal melody. Weevil of course takes a few bars to set the melody off and flesh out the tune. On closing Weevil takes the song very quiet, then exploding, showing just how much emotion one can put into a track with only acoustic guitar and voice. Very nicely done. Slow blues, She Used To Call Me Sugar, is an excellent example of strong blues guitar soloing on acoustic guitar and wailing blues vocals. I've always loved this style which I would call Hooker style with it's mix of changes in time, hammer ons and tight little soloing riffs. Really nice. Wrapping the release is John Lee Hooker's Roll And Boogie. Hooker was known for a lot of things but nobody charged a boogie like he did. Weevil dives into it head first with his driving guitar rhythm and stomping foot, pushing his grinding vocal attack, grunts, groans and fanning attack on the guitar. Excellent closer for a really strong release.

VizzTone Label Group artist: Little G Weevil - Something Poppin' - New Release Review

I just had the opportunity to review the most recent release, Something Poppin', from Little G Weevil and it's really different. Opening with high energy rocker, Here I Come Knocking, Little G leads the way on vocal and guitar, joined by Daniel Harper on drums, Marton Pfeff on bass, Laci Borsodi on rhythm guitar, Matyas Premecz on keys, and Danny Del Toro on harp. Very cool. With a distinctive R&B feel, title track, Something Poppin' shows a slinky side with thick vocals by Little G and cool backing vocals by Rebeka Easley Ellis and Sharika Allen Brown on backing vocals. With cool guitar riffs and a solid bass line, this is a cool track. Really cool R&B track, When You Want Me To Deal With This, is one of my favorites on the release featuring super vocals by Little G and a strong bass line by Pfeff. Premecz's key work sparkles and Little G lays in some real nice guitar riffs. You Can't Say Nothing has a real nice instrumental interlude featuring a cool exchange between Little G on guitar and Premecz on keys. Curtis Mayfield's Pusherman gets a nice redo with some trademark riffs and even wah wah. Little G's voice is quite different from Mayfield's so this track has a different feel. Crawling is another pseudo rocker with a heavy dose of R&B drawing thoughts of The Ides of March.  Wrapping the release is raw rocker, Top Model with a simple driven beat and garage style guitar riffs.   Little G lays out his best guitar riffs on this one for a dynamic closer.

Breezin' - Gabor Szabo

Gábor Szabó (8 March 1936 – 26 February 1982) was a Hungarian jazz guitarist, famous for mixing jazz, pop-rock and his native Hungarian music. Szabó was born in Budapest and began playing guitar at the age of 14, inspired by jazz music on the Voice of America broadcasts. He escaped Hungary and moved to the United States in 1956, a year of attempted revolt against Soviet-dominated Communist rule, and attended the Berklee School of Music in Boston. In 1958, he was invited to perform at the Newport Jazz Festival. Szabó performed with the Chico Hamilton quintet from 1961 to 1965, and beginning in 1966 he recorded a well-received span of albums under his own name on the Impulse! label. In the late 1960s he co-founded the short-lived Skye record label along with Cal Tjader and Gary McFarland. On the Skye label, Szabo recorded his album with Lena Horne in October and November 1969. Szabo had been part of Horne's backup band when she performed at The Nugget in Nevada in November 1966 and when she performed (with Harry Belafonte) at Caesar's Palace in Las Vegas in September 1969. His playing incorporated elements of folk music from his native Hungary and rock music's use of feedback. His composition "Gypsy Queen" became a hit for Santana in 1970 (see Black Magic Woman). Szabo's album for Impulse!, Wind, Sky And Diamonds, features "The California Dreamers", a vocal-ensemble consisting of Ron Hicklin, Al Capps, Loren Farber, John Bahler, Tom Bahler, Ian Freebairn-Smith, Sally Stevens, Sue Allen and Jackie Ward. During his solo career, he performed with artists such as Ron Carter, Paul Desmond, Lena Horne and Bobby Womack. Gabor felt he was never fully accepted as a jazz artist in the US. During a 1977 engagement at the Catamaran Hotel in San Diego, he complained to the audience about George Benson's success with "Breezin'" (composer, Bobby Womack). He indicated that he had recorded that song before Benson and that Benson had basically stolen the arrangement from him. His version can be heard on the High Contrast album with Bobby Womack. He died in Budapest in 1982 from liver and kidney disease while on a visit to his homeland, partly to find treatment for the drug habit he had been battling for years If you support live Blues acts, up and coming Blues talents and want to learn more about Blues news and Fathers of the Blues, ”LIKE” ---Bman’s Blues Report--- Facebook Page!

I'm Gonna Write You a Letter With My Chicago Typewriter - Pugsley Buzzard

Pugsley Buzzard plays the piano somewhat like Chico Marx, Thelonious Monk, Professor Longhair, Fats Waller and the Devil. He resembles a grizzly bear in a porkpie hat rummaging through a piano. His music spans the entire gamut from dark hoodoo blues musings to good time rollicking boogie piano. Pugsley writes his own material but also likes to interpret all sorts of classic material from old parlour songs, show tunes, work songs, blues, jazz, funk, cartoon music, film scores and more. He has composed for film and theatre and ensembles big and small.
