Acoustic Holiday - Svenson - New Release Review

I just received a new release, Acoustic Holiday, from Svenson. This is not a traditional blues recording but an extremely interesting acoustic recording. The release opens with Blues and Tocatta in e-moll. This track has base elements and turnarounds of blues but is really a very classical in nature. It is extremely clean and well executed. Next up is Continental Blues, an acoustic 12 bar instrumental with a traditional droning bass line but with more of a jazz feel and execution. In den Kordilleren is very classically Spanish in styling requiring very crisp execution. Very nice track. Melina has many jazz and folk characteristics. Samba de Gaia featuring Lulo Reinhardt, the grand nephew of the famous Gypsy swing guitarist DJANGO REINHARDT, has much of the flavor of South America as one might expect from the title. This has some particularly flashy guitar work that is really cool to compliment the Latin rhythm. Sixtus is a very strong classical/jazz style track and possibly my favorite on the recording. This was written by drummer Peter Johannesson for his live performances with Herbie Hancock. Just a solitary acoustic guitar well played with beautiful chords and clean articulation. T for Theia finds Svenson playing rhythm and lead guitar at once much like Charlie Hunter does except both on acoustic guitar as opposed to how Hunter accompanies himself on a guitar set up with both guitar and bass strings. Nice swing blues based jazz track. Another take at T for Theia features Dieter Kropp on harmonica. This adds of course a new dimension as well as changing the complexion of the track. The Ballad of Sam Hawkens played on a Fender Dobro, the other songs being played on a Furch d-22 with Cutaway, a Farida M-26 and a Flamenco Guitar from Atalaya Musical, Spain. The track is an exploration of lead work surrounding chorded melody. The final track on this release is The Short Journey of Isis and Re. This is a more experimental track with an exploratory melody. This is an interesting recording and one that a number of listeners could really enjoy.

Tech Talk - Fender Super Reverb Blackface vs. Silverface

The Fender Super Reverb was a guitar amplifier made by Fender. It was introduced in 1963 and was discontinued in 1982. This was essentially a Fender Super amplifier with built-in reverb and vibrato. The original Super Reverb amplifiers were all tube design and featured spring reverb. There were two different designs, distinguishable by the color of the "face" or front control panel. Super Reverbs from 1963 through 1967 had "black face" panels.

From 1968 until its discontinuation in 1982, the Super Reverb had "silverface" cosmetics and circuitry. Early models in 1968, while cosmetically "Silverface", did contain "Blackface" circuitry.

* 40 watts into 4x 10" 8-Ohm Jensen speakers (wired in parallel for 2 Ohms)

* Silverface models: 45 watts (power increased to 70 watts in 1975 and was given a Master volume with pull-out boost circuit and a solid state rectifier. Changed to 135 watts RMS in 1978 with an additional Mid control pot for the Normal channel and a Line Out jack socket.) Silverface amps made between '68 and '72 were emblazoned with "Super Reverb-Amp". After 1972 this was changed to just "Super Reverb".

Tube (valve) complement:

* 4 X 12AX7,
* 2 X 12AT7,
* 2 X 6L6,
* 1 X 5AR4/GZ34 RectifierTube for blackface amps and 5U4GB for silver face amps

* two channels: Normal and Vibrato, with Bright Switch

* Height: 24⅞" (63.2 cm)
* Width: 25⅛" (63.8 cm)
* Depth: 10½" (26.7 cm)

* Weight: approx. 65 lbs.

* A "Boost" control and a master volume were added in 1975.

* A Mid control for the Normal channel and a Line Out jack socket were added in 1978.

* Super Reverbs produced between late 1980 and 1981 have blackface cosmetics and a silver sparkle grille cloth.

* Master volume has a pull-out pot for distortion.

Tech Talk - Fender Bassman vs. Fender Bassman RI

First tube is preamp, 12AY7 is specified. 6072A may also be used. A low-noise, low-microphony 5751, 12AX7, or 7025 is also usable, though they will have more voltage gain and will change the sound of the amp considerably.

Second tube is a 12AX7. This is the driver. Any 12AX7 or 7025 is usable here--it need not be low-noise or low-hum, nor does it need to be tested for microphony.

Third tube is a 12AX7. This is the phase inverter tube. This tube need not be low-noise or low-hum, nor does it need to be tested for microphony. It must have good quality heater insulation. 12AX7s or 7025s are suitable. Good NOS 12AT7s may also be used here. We understand that some technicians recommend Ei or JJ ECC83s for this duty.

Power tubes are a pair of 6L6 (5881s were originally specified). Recommend using matched pair of 6L6GCs or NOS 6L6Gs, GAs, GBs, or WGB, or 5881s. Current TAD 6L6WGC-STR and re-issue Tung-Sol 5881 are the best option in place of NOS tubes. Also acceptable are NOS JAN-Philips 6L6WGB, and NOS types 7581A, KT66 or 350B. NOS metal 6L6s run too hot. DO NOT use other types.

Rectifier tube is type 83. This is a rare mercury-vapor rectifier. Only costly NOS is available. The similar type 83-V might work, although some technicians recommend against it. Warning: if an 83 rectifier is broken, there is a risk of mercury poisoning. tube 4 inputs Presence, Middle, Bass, Treble, Vol. Bright, Vol. Normal controls ground, power and standby switches
