I started a quest to find terrific blues music and incredible musicianship when I was just a little kid. I also have a tremendous appreciation of fine musical instruments and equipment. One of my greatest joys all of my life was sharing my finds with my friends. I'm now publishing my journey. I hope that you come along!

EG Kight - Sticks & Strings - New Release Review

I just had the opportunity to review the most recent release, Sticks & Strings, from EG Kight and it's solid release. Opening with Talk With Me, EG Kight sets up a real nice shuffle leading the way with fine vocals and guitar, backed by Ken Wynn on lead guitar and dobro, Gary Porter on drums, Sean Williams on bass and Porter and Wynn on backing vocals. Wynn steps up with a real nice guitar solo on slow blues, If You Have No Reservations, nicely supporting the front work of Kight. One of Kight's best vocal showcases on the release is ballad, All Things Considered with a strong melody, and a super guitar hook. This track should stand tall for radio airplay. Wrapping the release is another radio track, I Won't Ever Give Up, with an easy, pop melody and laid back accompaniment.

Blue South Records artist: EG Kight - a new day - New Release review

I just received the newest release (September 16, 2014), a new day, from EG Kight and she displays a full deck of down home sounds. Opening with soulful ballad Holdin' On, Kight, backed by drummer Gary Porter, bassist Johnny Fountain, guitarist Ken Wynn and keysmith Mike Harrell, sets a wholesome tempo for this new endeavor. Shuffle track, Graveyard Dead Blues, opens with Harrell on electric piano and Kight on solid vocals. Wynn whips out the slide for some hot, freewheeling guitar work and Harrell takes a nice piano solo as well. On blues ballad, Comin' Down With The Blues, Wynn plays a bluesy melodic guitar intro as well as a tasty solo and Kight holds the audience in the palm of her hand as she sings from her heart. Ex Cowboy Tommy Talton opens with a reverb saturated guitar riff, leading Kight into a full tent revival track backed really nicely by Willie Morris. Randall Bramblett adds his signature on B3 and Paul Hornsby contributes cool piano work. Very nice! On Catch The Wind Kight sings both lead and back vocal for an extremely pleasant blend. One of my favorite tracks on the release, this track is a solid soul ballad with Hornsby on B3 and Harrell on piano. Guitarist, Wynn takes another well articulated guitar solo icing this beautiful vocal duet. Bad Times is another exceptional soul track on the release featuring Greg Nagy sharing the lead vocal spot with Kight. Instrumentally, Cliff Meyers (tenor sax)really lays it out there with Bill Stewart (drums), Marshall Coats (bass), Tommy Talton (guitar), Paul Hornsby (piano and B3), Marcus Henderson (alto sax), Earl Ford (trombone) and Jerry Mullins (trumpet)really tow the load. Misunderstood is a clear radio track with a hi stepping beat, Kight again singing duet with herself and sweet guitar solo from Talton. Low Mileage Woman has a Latin beat reinforced by Johnny Fountain building a cool bass line and solidified by Gary Porter on drums. Harrell takes a nice ride on the piano as does Wynn on guitar. Another clever track that could easily see cross interest on the airwaves. Time To Move On is the bluesiest track on the release, stripped down and featuring Talton on acoustic guitar and slide. Paul Hornsby plays some particularly nice piano riffs supporting Kights superb efforts on this release closer.

It's "A New Day" for Georgia Songbird EG Kight - Her New CD Coming September 16 from Blue South Records

It’s A New Day for Georgia Songbird EG Kight - Her New CD Coming September 16 from Blue South Records

Latest Album Reflects Her Comeback After a Life-Threatening Illness

EAST DUBLIN, GA – It truly is A New Day for “The Georgia Songbird,” EG Kight, as reflected in the title of her upcoming CD, set for release September 16 on Blue South Records. Produced by EG and legendary producer Paul Hornsby (The Marshall Tucker Band/Charlie Daniels Band), the new album was recorded at Hornsby’s Muscadine Studios in Macon, Georgia, showcasing 10 original blues and roots songs performed in her inimitable sassy/sweet southern style.

With EG on vocals and guitar, she’s backed by her touring band of Ken Wynn – guitar, Mike Harrell – keyboards, Johnny Fountain – bass, Gary Porter – drums, and Rhonda Porter – backing vocals. Special guests include guitarist Tommy Talton, keyboardist Randall Bramblett and drummer Bill Stewart (all of whom played in the legendary southern rock group, Cowboy, as well as many other credits: Gregg Allman, Sea Level, etc.), singer Greg Nagy and producer Hornsby, who adds his deft touch on keyboards, too.

Kight’s grateful to be alive, after a major health scare a few years back. “When things happen so suddenly in life, it’s scary,” she says, “but most of the time we can somehow find a blessing from it. Since I recorded my last CD, I had a life-threatening illness (meningitis and encephalitis) and it changed my life.

“A year after the illness, I was finally able to write songs again, and they seem to flow from a deeper place,” she states. “That has been so cool. I already had some of these songs written before the illness, even one that my friend, the late Ann Rabson helped with, but several came from the ‘new me’ - “Holdin’ On,” “Don’t Give Up,” and “Time to Move On” among them. I have a new lease on life, and I believe this is my best work to date. Every day of my life now is A New Day.”

Kight has received six Blues Music Awards nominations and two Blues Blast nominations. Many artists have recorded her songs, and she’s had songs on two Grammy®-nominated albums, and on two blues compilations that maintained Billboard chart positions for over a year. Her songs have appeared on the Children’s Miracle Network, Nick at Night, and ABC Family.

EG remains positive and uses her music not only as a medicine for her own continued recovery, but also as a message of hope and guidance for those out there facing similar challenges.

Kight will support the release of A New Day with a series of CD release showcases, as well as club and festival dates, appearing solo, in a duo format, and with her full touring band.
